چکیده
All cells, eukaryotic cells in particular, are covered with carbohydrates of enormous diversity. These are part of different glycoconjugates, which are embedded into the lipid bilayer of the plasma membrane or associated to the glycocalyx of the cell. The glycocalyx is a highly complex sugar coating, which is typical and important for every eukaryotic cell. It can be considered to form an interconnecting supramolecular entity between the extracellular matrix and the cytoskeleton and, apparently, is an indispensable “cell organelle.” Saccharides are major constituents of the glycocalyx, playing an essential role in cell biology. This is well-known for the famous blood group antigens of red blood cells, all of them being carbohydrates. The biological significance of cell surface carbohydrates in cell communication unfolds in a highly complex interplay with other

Interfering with the sugar code: design and synthesis of oligosaccharide mimics.
Oligosaccharide determinants of cellular glycoconjugates interact with protein receptors triggering a variety of cellular responses within a wide range of physiological and pathological processes and with exquisitely tuned selectivity. This has led to the formulation of the hypothesis that a sugar code exists and that sugar-binding proteins (lectins) act to decipher it and translate it into bio...
متن کاملBiological roles of oligosaccharides: all of the theories are correct.
Many different theories have been advanced concerning the biological roles of the oligosaccharide units of individual classes of glycoconjugates. Analysis of the evidence indicates that while all of these theories are correct, exceptions to each can also be found. The biological roles of oligosaccharides appear to span the spectrum from those that are trivial, to those that are crucial for the ...

Chemical tools have proven indispensable for studies in glycobiology. Synthetic oligosaccharides and glycoconjugates provide materials for correlating structure with function. Synthetic mimics of the complex assemblies found on cell surfaces can modulate cellular interactions and are under development as therapeutic agents. Small molecule inhibitors of carbohydrate biosynthetic and processing e...
متن کاملOligosaccharides and glycoconjugates of human milk could protect breast-fed infants against norovirus intestinal infections
Background: Noroviruses are, after rotaviruses, the most common cause of nonbacterial intestinal infections in children. It has been observed a lower incidence of norovirus gastroenteritis in breast-fed compared to formula-fed infants. Effective vaccines against noroviruses are not yet available, enhancing the interest of the protective mechanisms elicited by human milk. Human milk contains a w...

A long period of studies on carbohydrates such as glycans and carbohydrate moieties of glycoconjugates has brought us a lot of understandings on various biological phenomena in the molecular level. Many of biological phenomena, such as cell-cell recognition, clearance of glycoproteins in blood, infection of pathogens, and initiation of innate immunity, are now recognized as those triggered via ...

Oligosaccharides and glycoconjugates are some of the most important bioactive components in milk. A great deal of information is available on the biological function of the components from human milk. Their primary role seems to be in providing protection against pathogens by acting as competitive inhibitors for the binding sites on the epithelial surfaces of the intestine. Evidence is also ava...
